/Gg/ is for Goals

During my paid working life, I did quite a few coaching courses that emphasized the value of creating goals. While I certainly see the value in doing this, I’m not so formal about creating goals in my personal life. Having said that, before I get up each morning, I always take a few minutes to figure out exactly what I want to achieve in the day, even down to the order in which I’m going to tackle the various activities. It’s become a habit of mine, something I did when I was going to work each day also.

My one big goal is to become a published writer of a book for children, well preferably books – plural – but even one would be amazing! So I write, I get professional assessments done on my manuscripts when I can afford to, I participate in my critique group, I network, I attend conferences, I submit my work and I do self-paced courses. I guess these are my ongoing goals. It’s quite difficult for them to be timebound. Who knows how long it will take to hit the jackpot with a publisher? All your ducks need to line up. Unless you self-publish, the goal of being a published writer (for the first time at least) can’t be timebound.

So apart from that one big goal, this year my aim (it’s probably not technically a goal) has been to view life hopefully – for me that’s a better word than optimistically or positively. It’s something I remind myself of every day, and something that an aspiring writer like me can definitely benefit from doing.
